Medicine Mounds: A Comanche Sacred Site Near Quanah

Four cone-shaped hills about 10 miles east of Quanah were considered sacred by the Comanche people for generations.

Medicine Mounds are four hills that rise 200 to 350 feet above the surrounding plains in southeastern Hardeman County. Comanche bands considered the site spiritually significant and used it for ceremonies. The town of Quanah, the county seat, takes its name from Comanche chief Quanah Parker, reflecting the deep Comanche history of this region.

The mounds are on private land. You can see them from the highway when driving east of Quanah. Copper Breaks State Park, about 10 miles west, mentions the mounds as a regional landmark. The Texas State Historical Association's Handbook of Texas has a full entry on Hardeman County and the Comanche connection to this region.
