Ranching Heritage
Kerrville was once called the Mohair Capital of the World
Sheep and Angora goat ranching dominated Kerr County's economy for decades, and the county shipped over a million pounds of wool in a single year.
By the early 1900s, Kerr County was a major center for sheep and goat ranching. In 1930 alone, ranchers shipped over a million pounds of wool from the county. That same year they also shipped more than 667,000 pounds of mohair. Mohair comes from Angora goats. Kerrville earned the informal title of Mohair Capital of the World during this time. The Y O Ranch was founded in 1880. It eventually grew to 600,000 acres and became a landmark of the region.
Ranching still shapes Kerr County today. Large tracts of land stay in agricultural use. Many landowners use Texas ag valuation rules to keep their property taxes based on grazing productivity rather than the land's market value.
