Monument Hill preserves a key moment in Texas independence history

Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Site in La Grange honors Texans killed during the Mier Expedition and Dawson Massacre of the 1840s.

This state historic site sits on a bluff overlooking La Grange and the Colorado River. It marks where the remains of Texans killed in two violent episodes — the Dawson Massacre (1842) and the Mier Expedition (1842-43) — were brought to rest. Both events happened as Texas was fighting to secure its independence from Mexico.

The site also includes the ruins of the Kreische Brewery, built by German immigrant Heinrich Kreische in the 1860s. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) manages both the monument and the brewery ruins together. The site is open daily. Check the THC page for current hours and entry fees before visiting.
