Navarro County is named for a signer of Texas independence

Texas established Navarro County in 1846 and named it for José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano patriot who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Navarro County was created on April 25, 1846. It was formed from Robertson County. The county is named for José Antonio Navarro. He was born in San Antonio and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836.

Corsicana became the permanent county seat in 1848. Navarro himself suggested the name. His parents were from the island of Corsica, off the coast of Italy.

The county covers 1,068 square miles in north-central Texas. It sits about 40 miles south of Dallas. The Trinity River runs along its northeastern edge. Corsicana is the only major city in the county. Smaller towns include Kerens, Blooming Grove, Dawson, and Frost.
