New Braunfels Still Carries Strong German Roots

New Braunfels was named after a town in Germany and was settled by German immigrants in 1845, a history that still shapes the city's culture.

The Adelsverein was a German society that paid for Germans to move to Texas in the 1840s. Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels led the first group here. He named the new town after his home estate on the Lahn River in Germany. Early settlers brought their trades, music, and farming ways with them.

Landa Park sits on the Comal Springs. It opened as a private resort in 1899 and later became a public park. Wurstfest is a German heritage festival that started in the 1960s. It brings visitors each fall. Natural Bridge Caverns, which opened in 1964, is nearby in the Hill Country.
