Flood Insurance in Tarrant County: What You Need to Know

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage — you need a separate flood insurance policy, available through the federal National Flood Insurance Program.

Tarrant County takes part in FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). If your home is in a FEMA-mapped flood zone and you have a federally backed mortgage, flood insurance is usually required by your lender. Even if your home is outside a mapped flood zone, storm flooding can cause serious damage — and your homeowners policy will not cover it.

Look up your property's flood zone at the FEMA map service center at msc.fema.gov. You can buy flood insurance through most licensed insurance agents — it is not sold directly by FEMA. One important note: there is usually a 30-day waiting period after you buy a new policy before it takes effect. Do not wait until a storm is on the way to buy coverage.
