Energy History
Oil and natural gas have shaped Nueces County since the 1920s
Natural gas was discovered in Nueces County in 1922, launching decades of oil and gas production that transformed the local economy.
Gas was found in Nueces County in 1922. Oil development followed fast. From 1930 through January 1, 1989, county fields had produced over 533 million barrels of oil. Petroleum refining became a big employer. Ranching and cotton farming were also major parts of the local economy.
Today the county still has refining, petrochemicals, and port work. The Texas Railroad Commission, or RRC, is the state agency that oversees all oil and gas activity. If you buy rural land, check RRC records. Look for old wells, active leases, or injection wells on or near the land. RRC records are free to search online.
