Water Supply

Your well water comes from a shrinking aquifer

Floyd County sits over the Ogallala Aquifer, a large but declining underground water source that supplies most wells and irrigation in the area.

The Ogallala Aquifer runs under much of the Texas High Plains, including Floyd County. It is made of sand and gravel that hold water underground. Most rural homes and farms here depend on it for water. The problem is that people pump water out faster than rain can refill it. Water levels have dropped over decades in many parts of the aquifer.

The High Plains Underground Water Conservation District No. 1 oversees groundwater use in Floyd County. If you plan to drill a new well or produce large amounts of water, you may need a permit from that district. Check with the district before drilling. Visit the Texas Water Development Board's Ogallala page for aquifer maps and water-level data.
