Oil and Gas Has Shaped Fisher County Since the 1920s
Oil was discovered in Fisher County in 1928 and has been part of the local economy ever since, alongside cotton and cattle.
Fisher County sits in West Texas ranch and oil country. Cotton farming dominated the economy through the early 1900s. Oil was discovered in 1928, which helped some farmers survive the Great Depression that followed soon after. By 1990, the county reported over 2.2 million barrels of oil produced in that year alone.
If you own land in Fisher County, mineral rights may be separate from surface rights — meaning someone else could own what is below your property. The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) regulates all oil and gas activity in the state. You can search well records and production history by county on the RRC website. This matters if you are buying land and want to understand existing leases or production activity on or near your property.
