Mineral Rights & Oil/Gas

Oil and gas activity in Eastland County is regulated by the Railroad Commission

If you own or are buying land in Eastland County, mineral rights may be separate from surface rights, and the Texas Railroad Commission oversees any active wells.

Eastland County has a long oil and gas history. A major strike at Ranger in 1917 made the county a center of the Texas oil boom. There are still active wells in the county today. The Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) regulates all oil and gas production in the state. Eastland County falls under RRC District 7B, with a district office in Abilene.

When you buy land, mineral rights are often already severed — meaning someone else owns the oil and gas below the surface. Before you close on any property, ask whether minerals are included. You can search for permitted wells and production records on the RRC website. If someone wants to drill on your land, the RRC sets the rules for how that must be done.
