Rural Properties in Brazoria County Need a Permit for Septic Systems

Any on-site sewage facility (septic system) in unincorporated Brazoria County requires a permit from the county's Environmental Health Department before installation or major repair.

Homes outside city sewer service in Brazoria County use on-site sewage facilities (OSSFs) — the technical name for septic systems. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) sets the rules statewide. Brazoria County's Environmental Health Department issues local permits and does inspections.

You need a permit to install, change, repair, or add to an OSSF. Pumping the tank is routine upkeep — that does not need a permit. But digging, adding parts, or swapping out major components does. A licensed installer or engineer designs the system. The design is based on soil type, lot size, and how many people live in the home.

Much of Brazoria County has heavy clay soil. Some lots need a custom engineered design. A standard system may not work. Before you buy rural land, find out if the current septic system has a permit and is in good shape. Contact the county's Environmental Health Department at brazoriacountytx.gov. Read TCEQ's homeowner guidance at tceq.texas.gov/permitting/ossf.
