Septic Systems Outside City Limits Need a Permit

If you build or repair a septic system on rural property in Potter County, you need a permit from the local permitting authority or the TCEQ.

Texas law requires a permit to install, alter, or repair an on-site sewage facility (OSSF), which includes septic tanks and drain fields. The permit authority is usually the county or a local authorized agent.

State rules require a minimum distance between a septic system and a water well — at least 50 feet from the tank and 100 feet from drain fields. If a local jurisdiction has not been authorized for your area, the TCEQ regional office serves as the permitting authority. Check tceq.texas.gov to find who handles Potter County.
