Age 65 / Disability Exemption
Extra Tax Break for Seniors and Disabled Homeowners
If you are 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability, you get an additional $60,000 off your home's school-taxable value.
If you are 65 or older, or if you have a qualifying disability under Social Security standards, you get an extra break. On top of the standard $140,000 homestead exemption, Texas law requires school districts to take off another $60,000 from your home's taxable value.
Some local taxing units also offer their own added exemption of up to 20 percent of your home's value. These are separate from the state amounts. To get these exemptions, apply at the Dallas Central Appraisal District (DCAD). DCAD is the office that sets property values in Dallas County. The deadline is usually before May 1. Go to dcad.org to get the form and confirm current rules.
