Age 65 / Disability Exemption
Extra Property Tax Breaks for Seniors and Disabled Homeowners
Homeowners who are 65 or older, or who have a qualifying disability, can get an additional property tax exemption and a school tax freeze.
If you are 65 or older, you may qualify for an extra exemption on top of the standard homestead exemption. You can apply in the year you turn 65 — you do not have to wait until the next January. A disability exemption is also available if you cannot work because of a physical or mental disability.
These exemptions also come with a school tax ceiling — meaning your school taxes cannot go higher than they were the year you qualified. That ceiling transfers to a surviving spouse who is 55 or older. Apply at WCAD (wcad.org) or call 512-930-3787.
