Palo Duro Canyon State Park Is a Short Drive from Amarillo
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, located in Randall and Armstrong counties just south of Amarillo, is one of the most visited natural areas in the Texas Panhandle.
Palo Duro Canyon is described as the second-largest canyon in the country. The park is about 25 miles south of Amarillo off Canyon, TX and offers more than 30 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Day use costs $8 for adults and is free for children 12 and under.
The park is in Randall County, not Potter County, but it is the closest major state park to Amarillo residents. Camping is available but the park often fills up. Reservations are strongly recommended. Visit tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-duro-canyon for current conditions and to book.
