The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon

The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon is a state museum focused on the natural and cultural history of the Texas Panhandle.

The Panhandle-Plains Historical Society formed in 1921. The museum opened its first permanent building in 1933. That Art Deco building from the 1930s is now part of a 285,000-square-foot complex. The collection holds about 1.5 million objects. You will find Native American items, pioneer-era displays, oil and gas history, and an art gallery with Texas and Southwest artists.

The museum grounds also include the T Anchor Ranch house, built in 1877. It is one of the oldest ranch structures in the region. The museum sits on the West Texas A&M campus in Canyon. It is a good place to start if you want to understand how the Panhandle grew from open range to farming country.
