Wildfire Risk
Wildfire Is a Real Hazard for Donley County Landowners
The Texas Panhandle sees some of the most dangerous wildfire conditions in the state, and Donley County has had fires large enough to qualify for federal disaster grants.
The Panhandle is one of the most wildfire-prone areas in Texas. Dry grass, low humidity, and strong winds help fires spread fast. FEMA issued a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Corner Pocket Fire in Donley County. Fires can cross county lines. The 8 Ball Fire started in Armstrong County, next door, and burned into Donley County.
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) — the state agency that handles disasters — sends firefighting crews and equipment to the Panhandle ahead of high-risk weather.
If you own land or a home outside city limits, take wildfire risk seriously. Talk to your insurance agent about coverage for rural buildings. Check the Texas A&M Forest Service for the current burn ban in your county. Burn bans can change quickly. The TDEM website posts active emergency declarations and fire danger levels.
