Geography & Land

Wood County Has Two Distinct Natural Landscapes

The western part of Wood County is Post Oak Savannah with oaks and open land; the eastern part is Piney Woods with pine forests — each side looks and feels different.

Wood County covers about 689 square miles and straddles two vegetation regions. The western portion falls in the Post Oak Savannah, dominated by post oak and blackjack oak with more open grassland. The eastern part is true Piney Woods, with loblolly, shortleaf, and other pines.

This split matters if you are buying land. Pine-heavy tracts may qualify for timber valuation (ag-use appraisal for forestry). The county is drained by the Sabine River to the south and Lake Fork Creek through the center. Elevations range from around 250 to 600 feet. Average annual rainfall is about 43 inches, which supports both timber and cattle.
