Playa Lakes Are the Main Public Outdoor Resource on the High Plains

Shallow playa lakes dot the Lamb County landscape and attract migratory waterfowl, making them a key hunting and wildlife-watching feature in this flat, treeless county.

The High Plains is home to thousands of playa lakes — round, shallow basins that fill after rains. Lamb County has several of these. They draw ducks, geese, and shorebirds during migration. Waterfowl hunting on private playas is common here.

Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) manages public Wildlife Management Areas that include playa habitat in the region. For hunting or wildlife watching on public land, check the TPWD website for current permit requirements. A state hunting license and an Annual Public Hunting Permit are typically required on TPWD-managed lands.
