Possum Kingdom State Park: Camping and Fishing on a Clear-Water Lake
Possum Kingdom State Park sits on a large lake in Palo Pinto County and offers camping, fishing, boating, and swimming about an hour west of DFW.
The park is located at 3901 State Park Rd. 33 near Caddo, Texas. It sits on Possum Kingdom Lake, a large reservoir in the canyon country of the Brazos River Valley. The lake has clear water and more than 300 miles of shoreline. You can swim, boat, fish, scuba dive, hike, and camp. Fish species include largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, and catfish. Striped bass fishing is rated good by TPWD.
Camping options range from primitive walk-in sites to sites with water and electricity to air-conditioned cabins. There is a daily entrance fee for adults; children 12 and under enter free. During busy periods — most of March through October — reservations are required. You can reserve online or by calling (512) 389-8900. A Texas fishing license is required to fish from a boat. Fishing from the park's shore or pier is allowed without a license. Check TPWD's site for current fees and reservation availability before you go.
