Who handles property taxes in Haskell County

Haskell County has a separate appraisal district and tax assessor-collector — and the tax office does not collect property taxes, so you need to know where to go.

The Haskell County Appraisal District (HCAD) sets the value of your property. It operates at 604 N. 1st St. in Haskell. The chief appraiser can be reached at 940-864-3805 or through haskellcad.com. This is where you file for a homestead exemption or protest your appraised value.

The county also has a tax assessor-collector's office at 1 Avenue D, Haskell, reachable at 940-864-2181. However, the Texas Comptroller notes that this office does not collect property taxes. The appraisal district handles that instead. If you get a tax bill or need to pay, contact HCAD directly to confirm the right office.

Texas law requires every school district to exempt $140,000 of your home's appraised value if you live there full-time. File Form 50-114 with the appraisal district to apply. Seniors 65 and older get an extra $60,000 school exemption plus a school tax ceiling, which means your school district tax bill cannot rise above the amount you paid the year you turned 65. Deadlines and local rates can change — always verify current rules at haskellcad.com.
