Who Handles Property Tax in Real County

The Real County Appraisal District in Leakey values all property and handles exemption applications, while separate taxing units set their own rates.

The Real County Appraisal District (RCAD) is the office that puts a value on your land and buildings. It does not collect taxes. Different taxing units — the county, school districts, and the city of Camp Wood — each set their own tax rate and bill you separately.

If you own a home and live in it full-time, you may qualify for a homestead exemption. That can lower the taxable value of your home. You apply at RCAD. The office is at 763 S US Hwy 83 in Leakey. You can also reach them at realcad.org or call 830-232-6248. Tax rates and deadlines change, so check with RCAD or the Texas Comptroller's county directory for current numbers.
