Public Hunting Access

TPWD public hunting land is limited in Ellis County — know your options

Public hunting land is limited in Ellis County. Most hunters use private leases, but a TPWD Annual Public Hunting Permit opens access to areas across Texas.

Ellis County does not have large tracts of TPWD-managed public hunting land like rural West Texas counties do. Most hunting here happens on private leases. But a TPWD Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit lets you hunt on nearly one million acres across Texas. That includes wildlife management areas in nearby counties.

The APH Permit costs $48 per year. It covers hunting, fishing, and camping on lands that take part in the program. Use the TPWD public hunting area search tool to find the nearest spot. Youth under 17 get in free when they are with a permitted adult.
