A State Permit Opens Public Hunting Land Across Texas

TPWD's Annual Public Hunting Permit lets you hunt on state-managed lands statewide, which matters if you do not own land in Jim Wells County.

Most land in Jim Wells County is private. If you do not have a lease or landowner permission, public hunting access is limited. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sells an Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit that covers hunting on nearly one million acres of state-managed lands. A more limited permit covers non-hunting activities like fishing and hiking.

Not all public hunting areas are in Jim Wells County itself, but this permit gives you access to the broader system across South Texas. Check the TPWD Public Hunting Lands Map Booklet each year to see which areas are open and what game is allowed. Seasons and areas can change.
