Hunting Licenses

You Need a Public Hunting Permit for National Forest Hunting

Hunters using the Sam Houston National Forest WMA in Montgomery County need a Texas hunting license plus a separate public hunting permit.

Hunting on the Sam Houston National Forest WMA requires more than just a standard Texas hunting license. You also need the appropriate TPWD public hunting permit. For most small game and general hunting, the Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit covers access. Some species or special areas require computer-drawn permits applied for separately.

You also need the correct tags and stamps for your target species. Season dates and bag limits change each year. Always verify current regulations with TPWD before heading out — check tpwd.texas.gov for the current Outdoor Annual or contact the TPWD regional office.
