Railroads and the Civil War Shaped Marshall

Marshall was a major railroad town and a Confederate military center during the Civil War. That history still shapes the town today.

The Southern Pacific Railroad reached Marshall before the Civil War. Later, the Texas and Pacific Railway moved its Texas shops and offices there. That made Marshall a major trade hub for the whole region.

In the Civil War, the Confederate government of Missouri moved its capital to Marshall. Vicksburg fell in 1863. After that, Marshall became a key base for General Edmund Kirby Smith. He led the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department.

Federal troops arrived on June 17, 1865. A Freedmen's Bureau office then opened in Marshall during Reconstruction. Those years brought sharp political conflict to the county.

All of this history shaped the town: Native presence, plantation slavery, Civil War command, and Reconstruction. You can find it today in local museums and historic sites.
