Sam Houston National Forest Has Miles of Trails Near Houston
The Sam Houston National Forest spans three counties including Montgomery and offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and camping.
The Sam Houston National Forest covers over 161,000 acres in Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Walker Counties. The forest is managed by the US Forest Service and is open for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, camping, and wildlife viewing. Horse and ATV riders need a US Forest Service permit to use designated trails.
The forest is open year-round, but summer visits come with high heat, humidity, and heavy mosquitoes — bring insect repellent and water. Some campsites and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The Lone Star Hiking Trail, which runs through the forest, covers 129 miles. Visit fs.usda.gov for maps and current conditions.
