Public Hunting
Nearly 48,000 Acres of Public Hunting Land Is in the County
The Sam Houston National Forest Wildlife Management Area includes about 47,600 acres in Montgomery County open for hunting, fishing, and camping.
The Sam Houston National Forest WMA totals 161,508 acres across three counties. About 47,609 of those acres are in Montgomery County. TPWD allows public hunting there for white-tailed deer, feral hog, waterfowl, dove, squirrel, quail, rabbits, and predators, among other species. Fishing, trapping, and primitive camping are also allowed.
To hunt here you need a valid Texas hunting license, appropriate tags or stamps, and a public hunting permit (the Annual Public Hunting Permit covers many uses). You must bring your own drinking water. Summer visits involve high heat and humidity — plan accordingly. Details are at tpwd.texas.gov under the WMA finder.
