Groundwater rules in Reagan County

Most of Reagan County falls inside the Santa Rita Underground Water Conservation District, which regulates well drilling and water use.

Want to drill a water well in Reagan County? You will likely need a permit first. The Santa Rita Underground Water Conservation District handles that. The district was created in 1989. It manages groundwater across most of the county — about 1,175 square miles. A small strip in the north falls under a neighboring district instead.

The main water source here is the Edwards Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer. A second aquifer, the Dockum, also exists. The Dockum's water quality is often poor. It is mainly used for irrigation and oil-field work.

This is dry West Texas. Groundwater matters for homes, livestock, and farming. Before you drill or buy rural land, check with the district. Ask about permit rules and current water levels. The district's legal authority comes from the Texas Special District Local Laws Code, Chapter 8883.
