Septic Systems in Harrison County Require a Permit

If your Harrison County property has no public sewer, you need a permitted on-site sewage system. You must get a permit before you install or repair one.

Most rural homes outside city limits use a septic system. In Texas, this is officially called an On-Site Sewage Facility, or OSSF. You must get a permit before you install, change, or repair one. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) — the state agency that sets environmental rules — writes the rules. But a local authorized agent, often the county, issues permits and does inspections.

Contact Harrison County to find out who handles OSSF permits in your area. If you are buying rural land, check whether a legal, permitted septic system is already in place. An unpermitted or failing system can be costly to fix. It can also make it harder to get a mortgage. The TCEQ website has a plain-language guide that explains what the permit process involves.
