Septic Systems
Rural properties outside city sewer service need a permitted septic system
Homes in unincorporated Nueces County that are not connected to a city sewer system must have an on-site sewage facility (OSSF), commonly called a septic system, permitted under state rules.
TCEQ regulates on-site sewage facilities (OSSFs) in Texas. Many counties have a local authority that handles permits. If a local authority is in place, you go to them. If not, TCEQ handles the permit.
The Nueces River Authority has also worked on remediation of failing septic systems in the Lower Nueces River watershed. High groundwater levels in coastal areas can make certain septic designs fail faster. Before buying rural land, confirm whether the existing system is permitted and in good repair.
