Septic / Water

Building outside Archer City means you'll need a permitted septic system

Most of Archer County has no public sewer. Rural homes use private septic systems that must be permitted under Texas state rules.

If you build or buy outside Archer City, Holliday, or another city, your home will almost certainly need a private septic system. Texas calls these on-site sewage facilities, or OSSFs. They include standard septic tanks, aerobic systems, and similar setups.

You must get a permit before you install an OSSF. A local agent issues that permit. In rural Archer County, that agent is usually the county or a program approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The type of system you can use depends on three things: your lot size, how well the soil drains, and how close you are to water. The state rules live in Title 30, Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 285.

Buying rural land with a home already on it? Ask for proof the septic system was permitted and inspected. A system without a permit can cost a lot to fix. It can also cause legal trouble. Before you build anything new, call the TCEQ or Archer County to find out who handles permits in your area.
