Septic Systems
Rural Homes in Randall County Need a Septic Permit
If your property outside city limits is not connected to a public sewer, you need a permitted on-site sewage facility (OSSF) — commonly called a septic system.
Texas requires a permit before you install, replace, or change a septic system. In Randall County, the local authority or TCEQ — the state environmental agency — handles these permits. Before you get a permit, a licensed site evaluator must check your soil and lot. A site that drains poorly cannot get a standard system.
There is one narrow exception. If your property is 10 or more acres and meets all other rules, a permit may not be required. But the system must still meet TCEQ standards.
If you are buying rural land or plan to build outside city limits, check with TCEQ or the county environmental health office first. Do this before you finalize your plans. The official rules are at tceq.texas.gov/permitting/ossf.
