Brazoria County Has Several State Superfund Sites, Mostly Near Pearland and Freeport

TCEQ tracks eight state Superfund sites in Brazoria County; most are former industrial or waste-handling operations in Pearland and Freeport, some still active and some cleaned up.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) lists eight current or former state Superfund sites in Brazoria County. Their names are Aztec Mercury, Camtraco Enterprises, EmChem, Force Road Oil & Vacuum Truck, Gulfco Marine Maintenance, Harkey Road, James Barr Facility, and McNabb Flying Service. Most were former industrial, fuel, or chemical operations.

Some sites have been fully cleaned up and removed from the active list. Others are still in the operation and maintenance phase. The Harkey Road site in the Pearland area was a former residential property contaminated with lead-acid battery chips used as fill material. It has been cleaned up. The Camtraco site in Pearland is still in operation and maintenance.

If you are buying or building near an industrial area in Brazoria County, checking TCEQ's Superfund list is a smart step. The full list with links to each site is at tceq.texas.gov/remediation/superfund/sites/county/brazoria.html.
