Tornadoes Are a Real Risk in the Panhandle

Potter County lies in an area where tornadoes occur, and knowing what to do before a warning saves lives.

Supercell storms crossing the Texas Panhandle can spawn tornadoes, sometimes violent ones. The NWS Amarillo tracks and issues warnings for Potter County. The Panhandle's flat, open terrain means storms can be visible from miles away, but it also means tornadoes can move fast with little natural shelter.

Have a shelter plan before storm season. Know whether your home or rental has a safe interior room or storm shelter. Check with Amarillo city and Potter County emergency management for local warning systems. Sign up for weather alerts at weather.gov/ama.
