Flood Risk
The Trinity River and Flood Risk in Tarrant County
The Trinity River and its forks run through Tarrant County, and flooding is a real risk — especially in low-lying areas near the river.
A 1949 flood killed 10 people and displaced over 13,000 residents in Fort Worth. That disaster led to the construction of the Fort Worth Floodway — 27 miles of levees built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) manages this system today.
Current projects aim to improve protection for growing neighborhoods near downtown Fort Worth. Even with levees, flood insurance is important in flood-prone areas. Check your property's flood zone status at msc.fema.gov before buying.
