Brazoria County Properties May Need Separate Windstorm Insurance

Brazoria County is one of 14 Texas first-tier coastal counties where standard homeowners policies often exclude wind and hail, making coverage through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association a common necessity.

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) provides wind and hail coverage in 14 designated coastal counties, including Brazoria. Private insurers often drop or limit windstorm coverage in these counties because of hurricane risk. TWIA fills that gap. It is not a full homeowners policy and does not cover flood.

To get TWIA coverage, a building must usually be certified as built or improved to windstorm-resistant codes. That certification comes from a WPI-8 inspection through the Texas Department of Insurance or TWIA. Buildings without that certification may have few options.

Hurricane Beryl in 2024 hit Brazoria County hard. Wind gusts reached 97 mph at the Brazos River. TWIA reported Beryl as the third-largest claims event in its history, with more than 31,000 claims filed. If you are buying, building, or adding onto a structure in Brazoria County, check windstorm coverage options early. Learn more at twia.org or tdi.texas.gov.
