Texas dropped the mandatory safety inspection for most personal vehicles in 2025
As of January 1, 2025, most personal vehicles in Texas no longer need a safety inspection before registration. Bowie County is not one of the counties that still requires an emissions inspection.
Texas law changed on January 1, 2025. Personal cars and light trucks no longer need a safety inspection before registration. HB 3297 ended that rule. If you live in Bowie County and drive a personal vehicle, you can skip the inspection station.
Emissions inspections still apply in 17 counties. Those are mostly around Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin-San Antonio. Bowie County is not on that list. Most drivers here do not need any inspection at all. Commercial vehicles must still pass a safety inspection no matter where they are registered.
In Bowie County, you renew your registration through the Bowie County Tax Assessor-Collector. You can also renew online at TxDMV or through the Texas by Texas app. New Texas residents must register within 30 days of moving here. Check txdmv.gov for current fees and your due date.
