Vehicle Registration
No Emissions Test Required in Potter County
Potter County is not one of the emissions-testing counties in Texas, so most vehicle owners skip that step when registering.
Texas requires emissions tests only in 17 specific counties. Those counties are mainly in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and El Paso areas. Potter County is not on that list. Non-commercial vehicles registered here do not need an emissions inspection.
You still need to pay your registration fee. As of January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires a safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles before registration. Commercial vehicles still require an inspection. You can renew online, by mail, or at the Potter County Tax Office. Check txdmv.gov for current requirements before you go.
