Weather Hazards
Tropical Storms Can Bring Heavy Rain and Wind to Jim Wells County
Jim Wells County is inland but close enough to the Gulf Coast that tropical storms and hurricanes can bring dangerous rain and wind.
Alice is an inland city in South Texas, west of Corpus Christi and not far from the Gulf Coast. When a tropical storm or hurricane hits the South Texas coast, Jim Wells County can receive heavy rainfall that floods roads and low-lying areas. Wind damage is also possible. The subtropical climate means annual rainfall averages around 28 inches, but storms can dump far more in a short time.
Jim Wells County is not in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) coverage area — TWIA serves only the 14 first-tier coastal counties. But wind and flood insurance may still matter here depending on your property. Check weather.gov for the local National Weather Service forecast and alert zone. Sign up for emergency alerts through Jim Wells County Emergency Management.
