Ranching Is Deep in Webb County's DNA

Webb County has over 2 million acres of ranch and farm land, mostly used for cattle, goats, and horses — one of the most land-intensive ranching counties in Texas.

About 568 farms in Webb County cover more than 2 million acres. Most of that land is pasture. Cattle, horses, and goats are the main livestock. The county's ranching economy dates to Spanish colonial land grants in the 1700s. Sheep ranching peaked in the 1880s before shifting back to cattle and goats.

Modern Webb County agriculture also includes onions and melons, which have been grown commercially since the early 1900s. If you are buying large tracts of land, ranch use is the default for most rural acreage. Productive ranch land may already have an agricultural tax valuation in place — confirm this with the appraisal district before you buy.
