West Texas A&M University Anchors Canyon's Economy
West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) in Canyon has been a central part of Randall County's economy and community life since it opened in 1910.
West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) opened in 1910 on 40 acres donated by Canyon founder Lincoln Guy Conner. It started as West Texas State Normal College, training teachers. Its first classes were held in the county courthouse while its own building was finished. Today it is part of the Texas A&M University System.
WTAMU is one of the largest employers in the area. It draws students from across the Panhandle and beyond. The university shapes housing demand and the local job market in Canyon. If you are moving to the area, the university's schedule and events are a big part of community life.
