The Wharton County Courthouse Has Stood Since the 1930s
Wharton's courthouse was built during the 1930s Depression era. It is a landmark in the county seat.
Wharton County has had a courthouse since 1848. The very first one was replaced fast because it was poorly built.
The courthouse you see today was built in the 1930s. It came out of Depression-era public works projects. An addition went up in 1935 and another in 1954. The style is Art Deco — clean lines and a streamlined look.
The building sits at the center of Wharton, the county seat. It stands on a square that early settler William Kincheloe donated to the county. If you need to do county business, the tax office and appraisal district are both close by on East Milam Street.
