Wildfire Risk in Dallam County

Dallam County sits in one of Texas's highest wildfire risk areas because of dry grass, low humidity, and strong winds.

The Texas Panhandle is prone to fast-moving wildfires. Dallam County is one of the driest parts of Texas, with low annual rainfall. Combined with dry grass, low humidity, and winds that can gust to 60 mph, fires can spread very quickly. In February 2017, wildfires broke out east of Dalhart after winds drove relative humidity down to 8–12 percent.

Burn bans can be declared by the county judge when conditions are dangerous. Check the Texas A&M Forest Service or your county judge's office for current burn ban status — it changes with weather. If you own land here, check with your insurance agent about wildfire coverage. The National Weather Service office in Amarillo issues fire weather watches and warnings for Dallam County.
