Wildfire Is a Serious Hazard in the Panhandle

Potter County's dry grasslands and strong winds create dangerous wildfire conditions, especially during drought periods.

The Texas Panhandle experiences some of the state's most severe wildfires. Dry conditions, low humidity, and strong winds can combine to spread grass fires quickly across open land. Burn bans are issued at the county level when conditions are hazardous.

Check the current burn ban status for Potter County before burning any debris or brush. The Texas A&M Forest Service tracks active fires and burn bans statewide. Also check with Amarillo Fire Department and the Potter County Judge's office for local orders. Burn ban status changes often; verify each time.
