Wildfire Hazard
Wildfire Is a Real Threat in the Texas Panhandle
Dry conditions, strong Panhandle winds, and sparse vegetation make Randall County a high wildfire risk area — especially in late winter and spring.
The Texas Panhandle faces wildfire danger often. Low humidity, high winds, and dry grass let fires spread fast. Wildfires here have burned hundreds of thousands of acres in recent years. The Texas Division of Emergency Management has issued multiple disaster declarations for Panhandle counties.
If you own land or a rural home in Randall County, ask your insurance agent about wildfire coverage. Clear brush and dry grass from around your home. That creates a buffer — called defensible space — that can slow a fire. The Texas A&M Forest Service is the lead wildfire agency in Texas and has homeowner preparedness resources at tfsweb.tamu.edu.
Randall County may also issue burn bans during high-risk periods. Check randallcounty.gov for the current burn ban status.
