Wind energy and wildfire risk both shape life in Nolan County

Nolan County is home to several large wind farms, and dry, windy conditions also create real wildfire risk.

Nolan County is home to a large number of wind farms, including the Roscoe Wind Farm area. The open grasslands that make good wind energy also dry out fast. When drought combines with strong winds, wildfire risk goes up sharply. Wind turbines and other ignition sources have sparked fires in the area in recent years.

If you live or own land in the county, check the Texas A&M Forest Service burn ban map before any outdoor burning. Also check the National Weather Service zone forecast for Nolan County (Zone TXZ054) before high-wind events. During drought, local officials may issue burn bans — violating one is a crime.
