Ice Storms Are a Real Hazard in Tarrant County

Tarrant County can experience damaging ice storms and freezing temperatures in winter, which can disrupt power, roads, and water pipes.

North Texas winters are mild most years. But when ice storms hit, they can be severe and move fast. Freezing rain coats roads and trees, making driving very dangerous. Pipes in homes built for a warm climate can freeze and burst when temperatures drop hard and stay low.

The 2021 winter storm showed how vulnerable the region can be to extended cold weather. Many homes lost power and water. Residents should wrap or insulate pipes before cold snaps, stock backup supplies, and watch NWS Fort Worth at weather.gov/fwd for winter weather warnings during cold stretches.
