On the evening of April 12, 1927, a large tornado tore through Rocksprings. It destroyed 235 of the town's 247 buildings and killed 74 people, injuring roughly 200 more. One-third of the town's population was killed or injured. The tornado traveled up to 65 miles on the ground and was later rated F5, the highest category.
The town rebuilt and survived. Today, residents and historians remember the event as a turning point that tested the community.
