Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Property Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If you own and live in your home in Edwards County, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.

A homestead exemption trims the taxable value of your home. To qualify, the home must be your main residence on January 1 of the tax year, and you must be an individual owner. You apply once with the Edwards Central Appraisal District. The general window to apply is January 1 through April 30.

Extra exemptions exist for homeowners who are 65 or older, disabled, or disabled veterans. The over-65 and disabled-person exemptions include a school tax ceiling — your school taxes cannot go above the amount set in the year you qualified. Visit edwardscad.org or call 830-683-4189 for the current application form and local amounts.
